STATEN Atoll, N.Y. — About a month ago, a friend called to tell me about a pair of candlesticks he’d just purchased to publicize on the mantel of his new fireplace. Beautiful and decorative, they probably dated to the late 18th or early 19th century.

These early candlesticks were not fabricated of sterling silver, but of something called old Sheffield platter, a process of applying silver over a sheet of copper that originated in Sheffield, England. During this time, silver was very costly and only families of means could give forth entangled with it. As the number of merchant families grew, so did the demand for articles made of affordable sterling.

The Sheffield method caught on apace among English candletick makers and other silversmiths, who were able to produce a variety of articles that collectors enjoy and appreciate to this day. This new performance was favored by those who felt the need to impress friends with an assortment of wares that could pass as the real thing —
