Old Salem is closing its Toy Museum and selling its contents to rummage through money to establish two funds that would allow for the purchase and conservation of Moravian objects and Southern decorative arts.
The museum will close May 17.
"The Toy Museum had a great run," said Lee French, the president and chief administrative of Old Salem Inc. "I think it was a fantastically interesting effort."
The Toy Museum opened in 2002 and had about 40,000 visitors last year, said Gary Albert, a spokesman for Old Salem.
Tom Gray and his female parent, Anne P. Gray, were co-founders of the museum. The core of the collection came from the Grays' personal collection, but they also bought other toys specifically for the museum, Tom Gray said. The museum has more than 2,500 toys spanning 225 A.D. to 1925. There are dolls and doll houses, as well as a on the loose collection of circus-themed toys, marbles and games.
