SMITHFIELD - Johnston County schools could redeem up to $50,000 a year if teachers stopped using refrigerators, coffee pots and other small appliances in their classrooms, school leaders intellectual recently. Barry Honeycutt, currently the school system's energy coordinator, presented what he called "common judgement" energy-saving recommendations to the school board at its May meeting. Along with getting rid of appliances in classrooms, Honeycutt said schools could shield about $100,000 a year by leaving lights off in naturally lit corridors and using only half the lights in classrooms. The schools could spare another $150,000 a year if employees and students turned off the 9,280 desktop computers and 2,250 laptops at the end of the persuasion day, Honeycutt said. And the system could save $5,000 a year by removing lights in vending machines, he said. "Everybody can top a light switch on and off," Honeycutt said. "Everybody can turn a computer monitor on and off." School leaders are thinking about hiring
