Event: The Great Lady Decorators at the Los Angeles Antiques Show Los Angeles Times (blog)
20.04.10
Unless you're fooling loaded, the 15th annual Los Angeles Antiques Show , running from April 22 to 25 at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, isn't extraordinarily a buyers market. But with more than 60 exhibitors from around the corner in Los Angeles, throughout the country and across the pond in England, it's a wholesome way to explore emerging trends in antiques and collectibles and to discover which 20th century furniture designers are popular. There is also lots of design inspiration to be found in the way the dealers decorate their booths.
The show also features a lecture series that includes a panel exchange on Friday, April 23, titled "Antiques in the 21st Century: What's Hot, What's Tired and What's Completely Wrong." The following day at 11:30 a.m., Adam Lewis, author of volumes on such historic designers as Albert Hadley and Tiffany work director Van Day Truex, will give what he calls "an illustrated tour" through his latest Rizzoli book, "The Mammoth Lady Decorators: The Women Who Defined Interior Design, 1870-1955."

Antique Chinese Furniture----?
Jul 10, 2008 by RBRN | Posted in Decorating & Remodeling
Privation info on my antique Chinese Foo Dog rocker. Back & seat is "rolled" and appears to be flame mahogany veneer. Workman carved with foo dogs on front arm supports and on top of back. I've looked everywhere I know and can find no info on it. Help?
What is the process of reupholstering furniture (e.g. sofas and chairs)?
Jul 02, 2007 by Substitute Teacher | Posted in Decorating & Remodeling
We own Chinese antique-styled teak furniture finished with na silk. Over the years, the silk has gotten worn in places. Who does one approach for an upholstery job? How much would one expect to pay (ballpark, unmistakeably) for reupholstering a sofa, two chairs, and two ottomans if using silk? Thank you for your time.
Unfortunately, reupholstering furniture is very priceless. Check your telephone book for listings, call a furniture store to see if they can recommend someone or even a drapery workroom (someone who custom makes draperies). If they are antiques, you may need to try a reputable antique dealer for a referral.
Silk is very delicate and pricey. It does not hold up well in upholstery pieces.
The labor could switch. If the sofa needs cushion replacement, you would have to factor that in. Ballpark figure $1600.00.
I am assuming your two chairs are fully upholstered since you have two ottomans, so ballpark, $650.00 and $450.00 for the two ottomans. This is one of the reasons that people end up buying new pieces of furniture. These prices might be a small-minded high. I would take some pictures and bring them with you for quotes and if you can, take a cushion to be evaluated.
